Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is a fully accredited teaching hospital with a progressive and caring approach to empowerment and education of Nurses.
Located just minutes from Perth's CBD, near the magnificent Kings Park in Nedlands, Western Australia, SCGH is a 28 hectare medical campus which provides a supportive learning environment to nurses at all stages of their professional development.
Charlies provides a full range of services in emergency medicine, cardiovascular medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, trauma, orthopaedics, neurosciences, general surgery, general medicine, urology, renal dialysis, rehabilitation and aged care and psychiatry.

Charlies is strongly committed to the continual support of our nursing staff. This is displayed in many ways, most notably by our guarantee that all areas are staffed to the "Nursing Hours per Patient Day" recommendations.

CANCER SERVICES CLINICAL SERVICE UNIT
As the leading adult cancer centre in Western Australian; we can provide nurses with extensive learning opportunities in a nationally recognised centre. A nurse will gain experience in cancer management from the diagnostic stage through all forms of treatment that may include high dose chemotherapy with peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.
Nursing staff care for the acutely ill haematology oncology patient as well as the surgical oncology patient. They will have the ability to care for patients during their inpatient stay and in some cases during ongoing treatment in the outpatient clinics.
Cancer services offers experience in:
- 50 inpatient beds
- Breast assessment centre
- Oncology Clinic
- Haematology Clinic
- Palliative Care
CENTRAL SERVICES CLINICAL SERVICE UNIT
This clinical service unit provides a service utilised by all other units within the hospital, providing care for both elective and trauma admissions. The services they provide range from Outpatients to the Intensive Care Department and almost everything in-between. Central is unique in the services they provide the patients and the hospital, from the patients perspective they can see the same nurse on their pre-admission visit and meet them again in the Day of Surgery Unit or the DO23 Unit. Nurses working in these areas have the opportunity to manage patients in the three stages of their admission.
If its something a little more high tech you're after, Central runs an 18-bed state of the art Intensive Care Unit, as well a suite of 13 operating theatres all equipped with the latest equipment that technology has to offer. To complete the service Central provides the hospital with a Radiology Department that last year undertook 93,000 examinations.

EMERGENCY, ACUTE MEDICAL & SKELETAL (EAMS)
CLINICAL SERVICE UNIT
An initiative within this clinical unit includes the establishment of an Acute Assessment Unit. This is a short stay unit for general medical patients. All patients are assessed and a plan of care using a multi-disciplinary approach is commenced on admission. Patients are then either discharged home within 72 hours or transferred to more appropriate units for continuing care.
Nursing staff also have the ability to combine post-graduate study in Orthopaedic and Emergency Nursing, while employed in the departments, as courses are run in collaboration with local Universities and the Centre for Nursing Education
Emergency, Acute medical and musculoskeletal service offers experience in:
- Orthopaedic - trauma, elective & spinal injury
- General Medical
- Emergency Nursing
- Community Nursing through Hospital in the Home
GASTRO-RENAL CLINICAL SERVICE UNIT
The services offered by the Gastro-Renal clinical service unit centres around five core clinical areas that are managed within a range of outpatient, day facility and in-patient beds. This unit covers several specialities allowing all staff within the area to develop a broad range of skills in both medical and surgical nursing.
As the state referral centre for Liver Surgery and Transplantation, nursing staff have the opportunity to work with some of Australia's leading surgeons in this field of expertise.
Gastro-Renal offers experience in:
- Haemodialysis, Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis
- Surgical Experience - Upper GI, Colo-rectal, Urology and General Surgery
- Medical experience - Renal, Gastroenterology and Hepatology
- Day procedures in - Gastroscopies, Colonoscopies and Cystoscopies
- Renal and Liver Transplantation
HEART-LUNG CLINICAL SERVICE UNIT
This specialty provides tertiary level acute services in a wide range of cardiopulmonary specialities, with the opportunity for nursing staff to develop skills in areas from ambulatory care to high dependency units.
This clinical service unit supports three high dependency areas to ensure their patients remain in the department and receive the best quality care from specialist nurses.
Heart-Lung offers experience in:
- Respiratory Medicine
- Respiratory High Dependency Unit
- Cardio-thoracic surgery
- Cardio-thoracic High Dependency
- Cardio-vascular medicine
- Vascular Surgery
- Coronary Care Nursing
- Cardiac Catheter Laboratory
NEUROSCIENCES CLINICAL SERVICE UNIT
This clinical service unit has 79 beds, located in three separate wards. The experience you gain in this specialty will help establish your career as a critical care nurse. As the state referral centre for Neurosurgery you will have the opportunity to work in one of Australia's premier Neurosurgical Units.
The experience you will gain is not limited to neurosurgery, with a mix of specialities that include neurology, major head and neck surgery as well as plastic reconstructive surgery.

- Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery
- Neurosurgery High Dependency Unit
(fully monitored) - Neurology
- Plastic Reconstructive Surgery
- ENT & Ophthalmology

International Applicants
We currently offer sponsorship on a 457 Temporary Residency Visa; this enables the successful applicant to work for up to 4 years. There are some disadvantages to this visa in that the applicant must work a minimum of 38 hours per week and are only able to work for the one employer.
If applicants are planning on applying for a Skilled Migrant visa we are happy to consider you for a position, if successful we will provide you with a confirmed offer of employment. The advantage of this visa is that you can work the hours that suit you and your family and can apply for senior positions as they are advertised.
