IMPORTANT MESSAGE – Nursing and Midwifery Registration
As of 1 July, 2009 ALL Nurses Boards in Australia require all international applicants to undertake an English Language Test to be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse or Midwife.
This applies to every nurse and midwife who had undertaken their nursing education outside Australia. There will be no exemptions.
This will make the registration process take a little longer; we urge you to commence your registration application and ensure you have ALL required documentation when lodging your application to reduce any further delays. For the IELTS you will need a score of 7 in all bands in one sitting and for the OET a score of 'B’ or above for all categories in one sitting.
Please see: http://www.ielts.org/ and/or http://www.occupationalenglishtest.org/ for more information.
At this stage Mutual Recognition is not affected by the above pre-requisites, if you are already registered in one State of Australia, you can apply for Mutual Recognition in any other state.

Nursing Registration
We understand applying for registration can be a hard task and frustrating at times when you are trying to get all your documentation together. We suggest you send out your application once you have all the required documentation.
Ensure as soon as you know the state you intend to work you send the application to the board immediately.
Due to the enormous amount of registration applications at the nurse’s board it can take up to three months for your registration to be granted.
It is a good idea to call the nurses board every 2-3 weeks to check on your application and also to ensure there are no documents outstanding.
The nurse’s boards will contact you via postal mail.
A few TIPS for you!
- Always download the information brochure and read it thoroughly. Ensure you go through the checklist of which documents are required for satisfactory registration. Missing documents will mean a delay in your assessment.
- Double check that you have certified all photocopied documents.
- If you are having problems downloading application forms, contact your consultant.
- Make sure you have professional references as well as character references; requirement details are always listed in the information brochure.
- Ensure your full name is on the application and that you provide evidence for any previous name changes. Names on all documents should be the same. If you are having problems or are unsure of something, contact your consultant who will be able to help you.
- Send your application directly to the nurse’s board. Ensure you have the correct payment amount.
If you are having problems contact your consultant.
